Understand why updates matter

Vendors release patches when researchers or customers find flaws that attackers could abuse. Delaying updates leaves a documented weakness on your device long after a fix exists.

Cover the whole stack

• Operating system updates (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android)
• Browsers and email clients
• Office, chat, and creative apps you use daily
• Router and smart-device firmware when the vendor provides it
• Browser extensions—remove ones you no longer need

Build a simple habit

Turn on automatic updates where you trust the vendor. Reboot when asked so patches finish applying. On shared or critical machines, schedule a weekly check that nothing important is stuck waiting.

Stay cautious with “update” prompts

Fake update dialogs are a common malware lure. Prefer the operating system’s own Settings or the app’s built-in updater over a pop-up that appeared while browsing.
