What Is Cybersecurity?

Meet cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting people, devices, accounts, networks, and data from unauthorized access, misuse, disruption, and loss. It combines technical controls, careful habits, and clear processes—not only tools.

Use the CIA triad

Three classic goals help you judge whether a control or habit is useful.

  • Confidentiality — only authorized people can see or use information
  • Integrity — information and systems stay accurate and unaltered except by authorized changes
  • Availability — systems and data are reachable when legitimate users need them

Balance the goals

A backup that nobody can restore hurts availability. Sharing a password “just this once” hurts confidentiality. Editing a file without knowing who changed it hurts integrity. Good security improves these goals together instead of trading one away without thought.

Stay ethical

This course teaches recognition, prevention, and recovery. It does not teach how to break into systems. Use skills only on accounts and devices you own or are explicitly authorized to protect.
