Wi-Fi vs Ethernet Basics

Ethernet uses a cable between your device and a switch or router. Wi-Fi uses radio between your device and an access point. Both can carry the same IP traffic; the difference is the local link.
Weigh everyday trade-offs
- Ethernet: usually more stable latency and fewer neighbors on your link
- Wi-Fi: flexible placement, shared airtime, sensitive to walls and interference
- Both: still need correct IP, DNS, and gateway settings
Improve Wi-Fi when needed
Move closer to the access point, reduce obstacles, prefer 5 GHz or 6 GHz when the signal is strong enough, and avoid microwave ovens or crowded channels when troubleshooting slow Wi-Fi.
Use Ethernet for tough jobs
Large downloads, video calls, and latency-sensitive games often feel better on a wired link. A short Ethernet cable to a nearby switch or mesh node can isolate whether Wi-Fi is the bottleneck.
