Start at the router

Your home router is the door between the internet and every phone, laptop, and smart device you own. Change the default admin password, keep firmware updated when the vendor offers it, and disable remote administration unless you truly need it.

Strengthen Wi-Fi access

• Use a modern Wi-Fi password (WPA2 or WPA3) that is long and unique
• Avoid open networks at home
• Put guests on a separate guest network when the router supports it
• Rename the network if the default name reveals the router model

Limit what devices can do

Review connected devices in the router app and remove unknowns. Turn off features you do not use, such as unnecessary port forwarding. Give smart devices only the access they need.

Know what “good enough” looks like

You do not need an enterprise setup. A unique Wi-Fi passphrase, guest network, current firmware, and skepticism toward unknown devices already reduce many common risks.
