Safe Public Wi-Fi Habits

Understand the shared risk

Public Wi-Fi is convenient but shared with strangers. Fake hotspots can mimic real network names, and unencrypted sites are easier to inspect on hostile networks. Prefer your phone’s mobile data for banking and password entry when practical.

Prefer safer paths

• Confirm the network name with staff before connecting
• Use HTTPS sites and official apps rather than random links
• Turn off automatic Wi-Fi joining for unknown networks
• Enable a reputable VPN if your workplace or school provides one

Lock the device while away

Screen locks, full-disk encryption (often on by default), and “find my device” features limit damage if a laptop or phone is left behind. Do not leave devices unattended and unlocked.

After you leave

Forget the public network in settings if you will not return soon. Watch for unexpected login alerts on important accounts.
